Fall Home Maintenance Checklist.

As the leaves tumble down and the air turns crisp, it’s time to give our homes some extra TLC. General maintenance can often get away from us, so choosing an easy to follow schedule like spring and fall helps ensure those tasks get attention. That’s where this Fall Home Maintenance Checklist comes in handy!
So let’s get prepared for the colder months ahead, to help keep your house in top shape.
1 – Service Heating Systems
schedule a professional HVAC inspection and maintenance, or do a DIY cleaning
change any filters
2 – Winterize Outdoor Plumbing
drain and disconnect garden hoses
insulate any faucets and pipes exposed to the weather to prevent freezing
3 – Clean Gutters & Downspouts
remove leaves, twigs, and debris to prevent clogs
ensure downspouts direct water away from the foundation
4 – Trim Trees Near Roof & Home
trim branches that are close to your home to prevent damage during winter storms
5 – Service Fireplace & Chimney
ensure the chimney is still clean and free of debris if you had a professional service completed in the spring
if you didn’t get a professional inspection and cleaning of your fireplace and chimney in the spring, book early before beginning use again
if you have a fireplace, stock up on fuel like firewood or pellets
6 – Check Weatherstripping
feel for drafts around windows and doors
add weatherstripping or caulking as needed
7 – Check Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors
test all detectors and replace batteries if needed
install new detectors if they are older than 10 years
8 – Clean & Store Outdoor Furniture & Yard Equipment
clean and store outdoor furniture and cushions
clean and store lawnmowers, trimmers, and other summer tools
consider draining fuel from gas-powered equipment
9 – Change Ceiling Fan Direction
fan should turn in a clockwise direction to improve heat distribution
10 – Check Heat Tape (Mini Homes)
ensure tape is in working order to avoid frozen pipes
A few honourable mentions not above would be replacing any burnt out exterior bulbs, plus inspecting and cleaning your sump pump (if you have one).
Completing this Fall Home Maintenance Checklist can help you protect your home, save on energy costs, and ensure a comfortable and safe environment during the colder months.
